Make sure to focus on the goals that you have to get. The saving should only be to ensure that you don't fail at the next goal.

Don't Try (and failing) to defeat more than one opponent at a time. You will find that you have a tendency to feed your opponent more resources when you start unraveling the plot. Make sure that you don't make the mistakes that cause your character to die. You won't allow yourself to die, thereby losing the possibility for a further save, and you won't allow the possibility for your character to be decimated to warrant a second save.

When you choose the saving skills that you want, do not focus on improving the ability to save frequently. Your character will become noticeably weaker when you do not improve your ability to save. Most party members will die relatively often and a character that survives will also survive virtually all the fights that it faces. Focus on your saving ability with your character, and don't worry about your ability to retreat and heal yourself.
